Words and Buzzwords of the Year – the German Language Society
A language tends to develop and change over the course of time. But increasingly it is the media who determine the way that German is used on a daily basis. New words come into being every day, often inspired by current events and spreading quickly as a result. The German Language Society celebrates this trend with an annual competition for the WORD of the YEAR. In 2010 they chose the previously unknown word “Wutbürger”, which refers to furious citizens at a massive, spontaneous and entirely unexpected protest against the building of a new station in Stuttgart. >>> other words of the year:
