*What exactly
is a "Sprachduo" and what learning tips are advisable?
The Sprachduo idea is simple: two people with a different mother
tongue form a "Sprachduo" to practice the language of
the partner vis-à-vis. You will meet in
a café to talk
in German for half an hour and half an hour in the mother tongue
of the opposite.
Here are 15 practical tips for learning in a "Sprachduo":
- Learning in a Sprachduo is voluntary
- Every Sprachduo partner is a learner and a teacher at the
same time. Learner for the foreign language and teacher of
the own mother tongue.
- The languages can be trained in different ways. There
are three possibilities:
- The German and, let say, a Italian speak for
one hour German and afterwards for one hour only in Italian
or
- the German speaks German and the Italian answers in
Italian or
- the Italian speaks German and the German answers in
Italian
- Sprachduo partners must be motivated,
- to speak in the foreign language and look forward
getting in close contact with somebody of a different
language and culture
- to get to know some details about the other country,
culture and the person vis-à-vis
- asking questions and answering questions
- explaining words or sentences of the own language and
giving examples how they are used
- Both Sprachduo partners provide mutual support during the
learning process and take care to benefit from the Sprachduo work
similarly.
- The Sprachduo partners meet regularly.
- The time for each language should be shared balanced.
- Take notes of new words and idioms your partner
uses. You should refer to them later in the conversation
or during your study at home.
- Try to explain words through combinations and delimitation
to other words. Discuss the matters by examples.
- You will often not get to know new grammatical structures
during a Sprachduo session. You will concentrate
more on the possibility to practice using grammatical
structures during the Sprachduo conversation.
- In order to improve your mode to express yourself, you
must have the courage to make mistakes.
- Now some suggestions for topics on the conversation in
Sprachduo:
- You talk about your first contact with German or the
foreign language
- You talk about how you got to Germany and why you
want to learn German or the foreign language.
- You describe your home town and what is worth seeing
there.
- You talk about where you would love to go on holidays
and why.
- You talk about your experience with German or
the foreign language in your country and why it is important
and interesting to learn a language.
- You talk about a book of a German author
or a book from your Sprachduo partners' country . Talk
about what you like of the book.
- You talk about of what you are interested in Germany
or of the country their language you like to learn.
- For every meeting at least one topic of the previous meeting
should be brought up again. In the following
new points for a further conversation
will arise.
- For your second meeting prepare a topic or think of a topic
to talk about before hand - you will have something to continue
the conversation if "breaks" will arise
- And a last tip: Do not screw up your expectations too high
for the language Sprachduo and to the abilities of your Sprachduo
partner for the language arrangement. The fun with the casual
conversation is in the foreground and must not be lost
because Sprachduo is not only a language but also a cultural
exchange.

Sprachduo partners should have at least language level A2 to practice conversation.
We also find Sprachduo partners for beginners. The aim
in this case is getting to know once culture
if you still must talk in your mother tongue or a third party
language, mostly English, at the beginning.
