Travelling to Bamberg via Frankfurt am Main airport

Link zum Flughafen Frankfurt - airport
[ Frankfurt airport ]

Frankfurt Rhein-Main airportexternal link - help for German language course offers some of the best value and most frequent connections to Bamberg. On arrival at the airport, take the train to Bamberg:

  • Journey length: 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Changes: 1x (Würzburg)
  • Cost: max. € 44 (2nd class ticket, fastest train ICE, not including any discounts)

You will find a detailed description of the journey here:

Planning

Flight: If at all possible, please try to book your flight so that you arrive in Frankfurt before around 18:00 in the evening. If you are flying to Frankfurt Hahn, you should aim to arrive two hours earlier than this in order to allow time to travel to Frankfurt station by bus. A good source of information on flight connections is www.expedia.com.

Rail journey: Find a train connection that fits in with the arrival time of your flight: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/. Enter "Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf " as your station of departure and "Bamberg" as your destination.

In our experience 45-60 minutes is usually sufficient time to get through passport control, baggage collection and customs and to make your way to the platform.

If you will be buying your rail ticket after your arrival at Frankfurt rather than online, we suggest that you allow an extra 15 minutes for this purpose. It is also a good idea to print out details of the train connection you wish to take before leaving home, so that when it comes to purchasing your ticket you are able to provide all the information without difficulty.

ICE arriving

Arrival at the airport

As soon as you have left customs, follow the blue sign "Fernverkehr" (see picture to the right.)

These will take you to the long distance trains platforms.

An alternative connection: you can take either a regional train or the S-bahn from Frankfurt Rhein-Main airport to Frankfurt main station in the city centre ("Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Regionalbf ") and then travel on to Bamberg from there.
Advantage of this connection: At the weekend you can travel with a "Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket" for just € 30 for up to 5 people.
Disadvantage: You will have an extra change in Frankfurt main station and the journey will take around 1 hour longer as the ticket is not valid for ICE, IC or EC trains.

Your train will travel to Bamberg via Würzburg, where you will be required to change. As a rule you will have between 10-20 minutes to transfer to the connecting train to Bamberg.

You will usually alight on platform 5 and will need to depart from platform 10. About 80m separates the 2 platforms.

You will then travel on to Bamberg with the regional train for a little over an hour.
