Travelling to Bamberg via Nuremberg airport

Link zum Flughafen Nürnberg - airport
[ Nuremberg airport ]

The shortest and simplest way to Bamberg is via Nuremberg airport:

  • Journey length: ca. 70 minutes
  • Changes: 1x
  • Cost: € 10 (rail ticket) + € 1,80 (underground train ticket) = € 11,80

From Nuremberg you will take the U-Bahn (underground train) and then the train to Bamberg. ..

You will find a detailed description of the journey here

On arrival at the airport

As soon as you clear customs, go straight through the airport hall, out of the building and on to the airport forecourt (20m).

At this point you will need to decide how you wish to travel to Bamberg:

  1. If you have previously ordered a collection service through TREFF PUNKT, they will already have met you in the airport hall. (This service must be ordered through Treffpunkt at least one week before your arrival and will cost € 65.)
  2. If you wish to take a taxi: These will be waiting immediately in front of the airport building and will cost around € 85 (The exact price is determined by the taxi meter. The journey will last approximately 1 hour).
  3. If you wish to take the U-Bahn (Metro) and the train to Bamberg: The journey will last around 70 minutes. This is far and away the cheapest option at just € 11,80.

To take this option, please follow these instructions:

As you come out of the airport building, you will see ticket machines ("Fahrausweise") just 5m in front of you and to the right. At these machines you can obtain your U-Bahn ticket to the main station (Hptb.).

Press the 2nd button from the top (left column for adults) and pay € 1,80 (as asked for in the display window). Ideally use coins or a 5, 10 or 20 euro note.

If you turn left and take the escalator down one level, you will reach the U-Bahn platform (20m).

As there is only one U-Bahn line at the airport (Linie U2) and this is the last station on the line, simply get on to the next waiting train.

With the U2 line, now travel 7 stations to the main station (Hauptbahnhof) which will take around 12 minutes and then follow the Zeichen der Deutschen Bahn symbol to the Deutsche Bahn (DB) trains. Nuremberg

At Nuremberg main station

Using the escalator, go two levels up to reach a walkway to the station hall. This will take less than 5 minutes. Once there, go directly to the large display board to find out when the next train* [ timetable download fahrplan ] to Bamberg departs (see picture to the right). Take note of the platform.

You can of course also ask the service staff at the desk underneath the display board to help you. Some useful phrases might be:

  • "Wann fährt der nächste Zug nach Bamberg?"
(When does the next train to Bamberg leave?)
  • "Auf welchem Gleis fährt er ab?
(Which platform does it go from?)
  • "Können Sie mir das bitte aufschreiben?" (Would you mind writing that down for me?)

* Information on the different types of train:

  • • The best value option is to travel with the RE (Regional - Express). This will cost around 10 € and will take 43 minutes. The Regionalbahn (RB) costs exactly the same but takes around 15 minutes longer.
  • The ICE (InterCityExpress) takes just 34 minutes but costs €18.

If you now go to the right, past the display board, you will see the machines where you can buy your ticket for the Deutsche Bahn.

Enter the number "9500" as the code for Bamberg as your destination (see the picture to the left) and the machine will display the following:

Now pay € 10 in coins or small notes and you will receive your ticket.

Continue straight on and after a few metres you will come to some steps taking you up to the individual platforms
